Diagnosis of Menopause and Perimemopause

There are laboratory tests available to help diagnose perimenopause and menopause. However, a women’s age and symptoms are usually the best indicators.

Menopause
Menopause is officially diagnosed when a woman has not
had a period for 12 consecutive months.
The average age of menopause is 51.
Most women will begin experiencing symptoms in their 40’s. This period of time is referred to as perimenopause.

Perimenopause
Some of the most common symptoms of perimenopause are hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia, irritability, moodiness, vaginal dryness, weight gain and irregular bleeding.
Other symptoms include hair loss, hives or other skin problems, low libido, depression, frequent urination and osteoporosis.
You may have one or all of these symptoms.
Symptoms ebb and flow throughout the transition into menopause. Most are related to fluctuating hormone levels. Others can be attributed to age, as well as to this natural change of life.
How long you experience symptoms varies from woman to woman. They may last for only a few months or they could last for three to ten years or longer.
