Osteoporosis Testing

Testing for osteoporosis is done by measuring bone density. There are several ways to do this. Bone density is only one component of determining bone health. As with any test, it is best to discuss the results with your health care provider.

DEXA
The most accurate method to measure bone mineral density
(BMD) is with Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry or DEXA.

The DEXA usually costs between $200 and $300 dollars. It is a very easy, noninvasive test. You simply lay down on the exam table while the DEXA machine scans your bone density at the hip and spine. You do not need to take your clothes off or prepare in any way.

The test compares your bone density to that of other women. The result is measured as a T score. If your T score is less than -2.5, you have osteoporosis. If your T score is -1.0 to -2.5, you have osetopenia.

There are conflicting recommendations on when you should have a DEXA done. Some insurance companies don’t cover a DEXA until age 65. This is much too late.

Many health care providers recommend testing sometime during the perimenopausal years, before you experience the accelerated bone loss brought on by menopause.

It is imperative to catch bone loss early. Then, you can begin treatment to stop further loss and rebuild bone.

Screening Test
There is a much less expensive screening test that measures the density of the heel of the foot or in a finger.

If you are showing signs of low BMD with one of these screening tests, you should then take the DEXA for further diagnosis.

Screenings are often offered at health fairs or drug stores for $25 to $45.
